The legendary saltwater crocodile, known as Burt, who gained fame with his role in the classic movie “Crocodile Dundee,” has sadly passed away, as announced by the Australian reptile center where he resided.
Burt’s presence in the film alongside stars Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski helped immortalize his status. The reptile was thought to be over 90 years old at the time of his death.
His caretakers at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin revealed through social media posts that Burt departed peacefully over the recent weekend, bringing an extraordinary chapter to a close.
"Burt's journey is one of formidable strength, endurance, and a character as remarkable as the Australian wilderness itself," the announcement stated. "Captured from the Reynolds River in the 1980s, Burt emerged as a globally recognized crocodile. He not only featured in Crocodile Dundee but also contributed significantly to Australia's image as a locale of stunning natural wonders and majestic fauna."
Later, Burt found a home at Crocosaurus Cove in 2008 and adopted the role of a compelling and commanding representative for crocodile awareness and education.
Burt was known for his solitary nature, refusing companionship even when previously housed at a crocodile farm. His fiery demeanor commanded respect from those who managed and visited him, showcasing the undiluted wild spirit typical of saltwater crocodiles.
In the beloved film, the storyline follows Hogan's character, Mick Dundee, as he leaves the isolation of the Australian wilderness to encounter bustling New York City life after meeting an American journalist, played by Kozlowski. Burt is memorably featured during a scene involving an encounter at a creek.
To honor Burt's legacy, Crocosaurus Cove plans to establish a memorial sign within the park.
