Microsoft Ends Era of Xbox Avatar Editor

Microsoft Ends Era of Xbox Avatar Editor

Microsoft has discreetly revealed a significant transition for Xbox users by announcing the discontinuation of the Xbox Avatar Editor early next year. The company clarified in its FAQ section that due to lower usage rates and the need to focus on other user experiences, the app will be withdrawn effective January 9, 2025.

Evolution of Xbox Avatars

Launched in 2018, the Xbox Avatar Editor offered gamers the ability to tailor cartoon-like depictions of themselves using a mix of complimentary and premium cosmetic choices. This platform provided ample opportunities for individualism and personal branding within the Xbox community, allowing users to portray their true likeness or an entirely different persona.

In recognition of the app's closure, Microsoft has promised to reimburse users for any purchases made through the Xbox Avatar Editor from November 1, 2023, up until its discontinuation.

Legacy of Xbox Avatars

Despite the phasing out of the editor, Xbox avatars created during the Xbox 360 era remain unaffected. These classic avatars will continue to be visible for users who choose to keep them, as well as on the Xbox 360 hardware.

For those looking to retain their avatar as their Xbox profile picture moving forward, the Avatar Editor app can still be utilized before its shutdown to capture and save a photo to their account. Detailed instructions on how to manage profile photos are available on Xbox support forums.
