Sony to Halt Free PS5 PlayStation Camera Adapter Distribution
Sony has announced plans to cease offering the complimentary adapter that allows the PlayStation Camera for PS4 to be connected to the PS5. This adapter is essential for operating the original PlayStation VR on the PS5, as the VR system uses light tracking technology.
Discontinuation Details
According to a statement on Sony’s support page, as of November 26, 2024, the PlayStation Camera adapter will no longer be available, or until current supplies run out. During this transition period, players can attempt to request an adapter through an online form.
If the online form is not an option, Sony's customer support can be reached at 1-800-345-7669. Players need the serial number from their PS VR processing unit to obtain the adapter.
Alternative Options
For those who miss the chance to get the adapter directly from Sony, there are third-party alternatives available on the market. However, it’s noteworthy that the official Sony adapter is free of charge when available.
Compatibility with New VR Headsets
It’s important to remember that games designed for the original PS VR do not work on the PS VR2 due to different tracking technologies. Some games have been upgraded to the newer system or adapted for alternative VR platforms. However, numerous titles, including popular first-party games, remain exclusive to the original PS VR.
To enjoy titles such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission or Everybody's Golf VR on the PS5, users need this particular adapter. Without it, access to these games is restricted unless they are re-released or ported to new systems.
