Sega's Latest: A New Virtua Fighter Game on the Horizon
Anticipated Revival for Fighting Game Lovers
It seems Virtua Fighter is gearing up to make a comeback. During a discussion with VGC, Sega's global head of transmedia, Justin Scarpone, casually revealed that a new title in the Virtua Fighter series is under development. He stated, "We currently have a lineup of games in progress that fit into our legacy categories, which we announced at The Game Awards last year." The list includes Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and indeed, a new Virtua Fighter. This prospect is exhilarating for fans.
This revelation is particularly thrilling because although these games were previously featured at The Game Awards as part of a fresh chapter for Sega, Scarpone's mention of Virtua Fighter provides new insight. The most recent official release in this series was Virtua Fighter 5, dating all the way back to 2006. Although the series hasn’t been idle with iterations like Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown in 2015 and 2021's Virtua Fighter Ultimate Showdown, fans have waited nearly two decades for a completely new installment.
Aside from Scarpone's casual confirmation that Sega is developing a follow-up, specifics about the anticipated Virtua Fighter 6 remain elusive. It's reasonable to expect beloved characters like Akira Yuki to reappear, but changes in fighters and gameplay features might lie ahead.
